Richard Zawadski (59) trained at Aberdeen Agricultural College and returned to Shapinsay in 1972, where he took on the management of the family farm, helping to build up the renowned Balfour Mains beef herd, which was dispersed in 1995. During this period Richard served a term as President of the Shapinsay Branch of the SNFU and on the Orkney SNFU Executive. Richard also provided the inspiration and management skills behind the development of the world renowned “Balfour Shoot” which, from modest beginnings in 1976, went on to provide some of the best and most commercially successful wild-fowling in Northern Europe. Richard has been a Director of the Shapinsay Development Trust, and his early interest in Wind Energy led to the formation of his own Development Company, Shapinsay Wind Energy Ltd.

In 2009 Richard conducted the successful sale of the Family estate, on Shapinsay, and moved to the Orkney Mainland. He became a significant shareholder in Hammars Hill Energy in the Autumn of 2009, and was co-opted onto the Hammars Hill Board in the winter of 2010.
